Make up your mind to weigh less

Think about it: Can a 1,000-calorie diet of pastry, pasta and pizza allow you to lose weight? Junk food creates bad chemistry in the body. They lack vital nutrients such as the vitamins B, C and E, and once in the body, they make amends by depleting the brain, body and bones of every good nutrient available. This affects your brain function, which in turn affects your mental resolve and willpower to eat healthy. What is worse is that this lack of nutrients can set up those nasty sweet and junk food cravings, ensuring that you continue to eat unhealthy food.

What we choose to eat creates hormonal chemistry, which is responsible for hastening or slowing our weight-loss process. It is this very same chemistry that also contributes to mental clarity, decision-making ability, concentration and focus—in effect, it sets the stage for the mindset that makes weight loss possible in the first place.

Go nuts: Like its shape suggests, walnuts are good brain food.

Weak willpower causes most health plans to fail. Ask yourself what causes your willpower to become weak in the first place, and the answer will likely be your diet and lifestyle choices.

Healthy food and healthy eating practices ensure that you remain calm and have improved levels of concentration. Healthy foods contribute vital nutrients needed for the brain and the body to function properly and, in turn, this helps to strengthen your willpower and self-control. Switching to a healthier lifestyle makes weight loss a whole lot easier.

Brain food
Ensure you include a handful of nuts and seeds in your diet daily. Almonds and walnuts, and flax, sesame, sunflower and pumpkin seeds are nutritional powerhouses and rich sources of the healthy omega nutrition, namely, the omega-3 and omega-6 fats. These fats are vital for brain function and several metabolic processes such as maintaining blood pressure, keeping arteries healthy and even keeping waistlines trim. In fact, 60% of our brain structure, which includes neurons or brain cells, is made up of omega fats. Which is why regular consumption of foods that contain the omega fats helps to improve memory and concentration.

Seafood, especially fish which have teeth, such as pomfret, rawas and mackerel, is also very rich in omega-3 fats. The healthier oils in these fish include DHA and EPA (docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, which are types of omega-3 fat), which help you avoid mood swings and prevents depression. This, in turn, can keep you motivated to achieve weight-loss goals. So, when you are on a weight-loss plan and are a non-vegetarian, have fish at least three times a week with green, leafy vegetables. The combination of the healthy omega-3 fats in the fish and folate in the leafy greens positively impact your weight-loss plan.

While on a weight-loss plan, also make sure that you eat at least 800g-1kg of multicoloured vegetables daily. Purple, red, yellow, dark green and orange — count at least five colours on your plate for lunch and dinner. Apart from providing energy and improving immunity, vegetables are vital for improved metabolism. For instance, vitamin C in tomatoes helps you absorb the iron in legumes and grains, while vitamin B6 helps with the absorption of protein foods such as fish, and so on.

Craving control

Rich in fibre: Whole cereals and legumes keep bad moods at bay.

Rich in fibre: Whole cereals and legumes keep bad moods at bay.

Junk food is digested quickly by the body and, hence, causes sharp spikes in blood sugar. These spikes in blood sugar compromise brain function and set up unhealthy food cravings. Switching to a diet rich in wholegrain cereals prevents cravings for junk food. Also, fibre in food slows digestion and provides constant energy throughout the day. This helps your brain function smoothly and consistently.

Natural, unrefined grains and legumes are also rich in fibre and a host of other nutrients. The brain works best if your daily diet includes some slow energy-release foods such as oats, bajra (pearl millet), jowar (sorghum), nachni (ragi or finger millet), rajma (red kidney beans), chana (chickpeas) and chowli (lobia or black-eyed beans).

Sex in Early age Increase cervical cancer risk

Young women who have sex at an early age are more likely to develop cervical cancer, a study of 20,000 women has Cancer

The finding came after experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer investigated why poorer women have a higher risk of the disease.

Until now, experts thought that the difference in cases of the disease could be just because poorer women were less likely to go for cervical screening.

But researchers now think the difference is largely because poorer women start having sex an average of four years earlier.

Cervical cancer is largely triggered by the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV) - which is sexually transmitted.

Study’s lead author, Dr Silvia Franceschi, said the findings were not restricted to adolescence and the risk of cervical cancer was also higher in women who had their first sexual intercourse at 20 rather than 25 years.

"In our study, poorer women had become sexually active on average four years earlier,” the BBC quoted Franceschi as saying.

"So they may have also been infected with HPV earlier, giving the virus more time to produce the long sequence of events that are needed for cancer development,” Franceschi added.

Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, said the study raised some interesting questions.

"Although women can be infected by HPV at any age, infections at a very young age may be especially dangerous as they have more time to cause damage that eventually leads to cancer.

"Importantly, the results back up the need for the HPV vaccination to be given in schools at an age before they start having sex, especially among girls in deprived areas."

The findings are published in the British Journal of Cancer.

Older Single Women and Sexual Health Issues

Older women returning to the dating scene are more at risk of sexually transmitted infections than their younger counterparts, a University of Alabama (UA) researcher has found. UA researcher Dr. Bronwen Lichtenstein came to this conclusion after analysing the health risks women over the age of 35 faced when they returned to the dating scene after the break-up of a long-term relationship.

Lichtenstein's study was based around the hypothesis that after an older woman leaves a long-term relationship, she may make risky dating choices. "Being in a relationship for 20 years means you have no idea what the dating scene is like today," she said. Indeed, Lichtenstein's survey revealed that older women often faced depression, lack of health information, and lack of social support after their relationships ended.

The study also examined whether these women, who were recently divorced or widowed, were equipped with the proper health information about the spread of sexually transmitted diseases when dating. "Women are biologically more at risk for STDs at 50 than at 20, and most women don't realize it," she noted.

Almost all the women in the study reported being depressed after ending a relationship, and astonishingly, at least half the women were diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection. The women faced biological, emotional and personal issues, although the real problem is that the issues are not being addressed, Lichtenstein found.

"There is a lot of uncertainty and anxiety in returning to the dating scene - women ask 'Am I attractive?' and 'What are the rules?' - but nobody knows what the rules are because everything's changed," she said.

Lichtenstein suggested that women who are confident and assured of themselves seem to deal with difficult relationship issues better, noting that while they may not be in a better place, they can find other things to do and find a satisfying life on their own. "A good example of this is a 62-year-old woman who joined a motorcycle club and began a wonderful social life. Another example would be a woman who never married but owned her own business and had a lot of friends," she said.
